Donald Trump is offering a tax credit worth up to $100,000 for consumers buying food and beverage products from companies that use chemicals to remove harmful ingredients.
The White House on Tuesday released a proposal to provide the credit to individuals and businesses, including restaurants and restaurants-owned or operated by nonprofits.
The plan would help cover the cost of processing, packaging and storing food and beverages at businesses, as well as the cost to produce the food and other products.
It would be available to individuals earning up to 200 percent of the federal poverty level, which is $14,831 for a single person, and up to 1,200 percent for married couples earning less than $30,000 per year.
The proposal would also give the credit if a consumer purchases an item from an eligible company on the federal or state level, according to the White House.
The announcement came just a day after Trump signed a $1.9 trillion tax overhaul bill, which the president said would boost economic growth by $2.5 trillion.
But the proposal did not include any language to increase the credit for consumers, and did not address a provision that would allow individuals to claim the credit on their federal income tax returns.
The tax bill also does not provide an offsetting tax credit to families with children who purchase food and/or beverage products at a local food or beverage retailer.
The measure also does no mention of the credit when it comes to individuals, as Trump has previously promised to do.
The White House said the credit is “comparable to the tax credit for food” in some cases, but said there is no current provision to make it available to families that purchase food or beverages.
It also did not provide a figure for the cost that the food-processing industry is paying to process the food.
It is estimated that the industry is in the $200 billion to $300 billion industry, the White the statement said.
The companies that would benefit from the credit would be small and medium-sized businesses, which can use the credit in order to reduce the cost and time it takes to process their products.
